This is by far some of the best book art I have seen, simply genius. Made by Thomas Allen, www.thomasallenonline.com. We are both exhibiting in the World Pop Up Art show in Seoul Arts Centre, South Korea at the moment.

For thousands of years we used paper to write, paint and communicate our thoughts, dreams and desires. Paper-cutting is a unique art form, Chinese women use this graceful and intricate media to record the joy and surprises of their lives.

The role of women in paper cutting.

I am researching deeper into paper cutting and have discovered that in China in the countryside paper cutting is almost solely done by women and girls. In the past this was even a skill that was used to judge brides. Females were expected to master the craft.

Pink House (Picardie, France) by Louise Bristow.
This is my favourite of her models. She constructs 3D scenes which she then paints 2D scenes from. The paintings that result have a very special quality which, as a maker, I love.

I came across this wonderful painting by Louise Bristow today when researching the theme of constructed realities. It is ‘Untitled (Woodshed)’, 2005, http://www.louisebristow.com
I love the sticks resting on the wooden ‘house’. It reminds me of making dens as a child.
